Toxic Free Beauty – by a Fibromyalgia Sufferer

If you have found yourself here it’s because you are looking to find out more about toxic free Beauty?

Whilst I do not practice using entirely toxic free beauty products (my disclaimer) I do have a chronic illness which is based around inflammation. I have done a lot of research on this and toxins absorbed through the skin can cause flare ups in many of the symptoms I already suffer from within my illness Fibromyalgia. These symptoms include –

• Inflammation

• Skin sensitivity

• Brain fog

• Hair loss

• Weight gain

• Nausea

There are many chronic illnesses that have these symptoms (Crohn’s Disease, Lyme Disease, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Irritable Bowl Syndrome, ME just to name a few)  and we all have different levels of severity and tolerance especially with skin sensitivity and inflammation which is the main focus around why I am writing this toxic free beauty series for you all.

Our skin can become immediately sensitive and sore if you are hyper sensitive to toxins, something I am fortunate not to suffer from (at the moment) but I know many chronic illness suffers suffer with extremely sensitive skin. This is why I wanted to delve into this and create a post that might help you all.

Beauty for me is about self-care and indulgence. I started my whole beauty creator journey through my Fibromyalgia diagnosis as a distraction and a way to spark joy every day so that my mental health didn’t begin to suffer as an effect of my symptoms and struggles. So, I love nothing more than to indulge in a good pamper session, but I like my products to feel indulgent to, that’s kind of the whole point. You want the sensory experience whilst looking after your body and your well-being. you want your products too look good, feel good and smell good to. This could be a problem if you are extra sensitive to toxins as your skin will not allow you to use just any product without it causing a flare up. The reason why toxins cause flare ups is because the moment they come into contact with your skin they are absorbed right into the blood stream which then travels around your body attacking your weak spots.

Some toxins you need to look out for which can be found in beauty products are (these are just some of there are many more) you can fin the list of ingredients on the packaging of your beauty products where you can check if these exist. You will be surprised that most products unfortunately do –

• Parabens

• Triclosan

• SLS & SLES

• Oxybenzone

• Talc

• Carbon Black

• Phthalates

• Synthetic Fragrance

Toxins in beauty are found across the whole industry but the biggest offenders that contain the highest levels are deodorant, body wash, body lotion, shampoo, conditioner & perfume.

Whilst I am not going to right now cover every angle, I am going to cover the categories of skincare, makeup, body and wellness.

So, over the last couple of months I have been doing some research into some toxic free brands and got to work trying some of them out to see just how indulgent they are so that I could recommend them to all my fellow chronic illness sufferers especially those that have hyper sensitivity to toxins. Hopefully this will help you next time you do your beauty hauls knowing these brands are not going to add to or trigger your symptoms. I got your backs! We all deserve some me time and to feel good about ourselves. Be that a skincare routine, a soak in the bath, smelling good or painting our faces.

Keep an eye out for my upcoming posts on the categories mentioned. You can also subscribe to my page where you will then receive updates when I post. Don’t worry I do not bombard you. I only post maximum 8 times a month if that!
