Why skin tints are replacing foundation in 2026

When it comes to makeup in 2026, the overall approach to complexion products has definitely shifted towards a “less is more” mindset. Over the past few years, social media has played a huge role in elevating skincare, encouraging us to focus on healthy, glowing skin rather than covering it up with heavy makeup. From detailed skincare routines to expert-backed advice, we are now spending far more time investing in our skin than perfecting a full-coverage base.

As beauty trends continue to lean towards low-maintenance routines and natural-looking makeup, the demand for thick, full-coverage foundations has started to decline. Instead, more people are reaching for lightweight skin tints that enhance the skin rather than mask it. The goal is no longer flawless, airbrushed perfection, it’s healthy, radiant skin that still looks like skin.

After all, the secret to flawless makeup has always been good skincare.

One of the biggest beauty trends dominating social media right now is the idea of “your skin, but better.” This trend perfectly captures the shift towards lightweight, breathable makeup that enhances natural features while still allowing skin texture, freckles, and imperfections to show through. Rather than relying on heavy foundation, many people are opting for minimal coverage and using bronzers and blushers to bring warmth, dimension, and colour back into the face.

Personally, I’ve been loyal to skin tints for years. I love a base that feels invisible on the skin, just a little something that evens out my complexion without completely covering who I am and disguising my natural beauty. For me, the best complexion products are the ones that let natural skin texture shine through while still giving that fresh, healthy glow.

Why skin tints are replacing foundation

Why are we reaching for the skin tints?

The formula of a skin tint is favoured for being lightweight, it allows the skin to breathe, its super hydrating and leaves a dewy, radiant, healthy skin finish. The perfect base for daily wear.

What is the coverage of a skin tint?

Most skin tints are sheer-to lightweight coverage.

How do you apply a skin tint?

Another reason why the skin tint has become popular is because its so easy to use! We are always looking for shortcuts and the skin tint is a good one if you a stuck for time when doing your makeup. It can be easily applied with your fingers, the warmth of your body melts it into the skin and is ideal for a 5 minute makeup routine or a product to use on the go.

Is a skin tint suitable for all weather?

Yes. Of course! Though a skin tint is particularly favoured in the warmer months due to its lightweight, comfortable and breathable feel. Ideal for warm weather or active days.

Is a skin tint suitable for mature skin?

Absolutely! There is a common misconception that mature skin needs more coverage. When actually lighter formulas work better for mature skin as they do not crease, or sit in fine lines or wrinkles. Achieving a more youthful appearance and a healthy glow.

Where can I purchase a skin tint?

You can purchase skin tints from many beauty retailers. You can find some of my exclusive promotions, to save up to 20% HERE

My skin tint recommendations

Milk Makeup Hydro Grip Gel Tint

Milk Makeup Hydro Grip Gel Tint Close up skin preview

A buildable skin tint that is laced with skincare ingredients making it the perfect hybrid for a lit from within healthy glow. This is one of my absolute faves for a healthy skin look and finish. It has a light weight gel formula that works like a dream with my combination skin and it melts and blends in so seamlessly and effortlessly.  The formula of this one is slightly thicker than some of my other favourites so it works really well in the colder months to when our skin is drier and paler.

The coverage is light but can be built to a medium.

Available in 15 shades.

Fenty Beauty Eaze Drop

This blurring skin tint has been in my makeup bag since it launched. Definitely one of my most worn base products. I suffer from rosacea and find that despite its lightweight texture it evens my skin tone and neutralises the redness. Feels really soft and velvety, super hydrating and leaves a soft focus finish on the skin. I also find this one has a good longevity like a foundation. Doesn’t transfer and holds up well against sweat and humidity.

Available in 25 shades

Erborian CC crème

This ones available in 15ml travel and 40ml full size so perfect if you commute and travel a lot. When K beauty and French pharmacy collide you get Erborian a brand that is dedicated to helping you get the best out of your skin so of course they created a skin tint with their ethos in mind. Their CC crème is a skincare/ makeup hybrid that is lightweight and adapts to your skin, evening out skin tone, texture, blurring and hydrating for a natural radiant finish. I particularly love to use this product on no makeup days as it also has a built in SPF25 so it is protecting my skin, giving it a little radiance boost without me needing to do a full face of makeup.
