I like a rich moisturiser when my skin genuinely needs one, but there are plenty of days when I want hydration without feeling as though I have covered my face in cream.

That is where Dr Dennis Gross Hyaluronic Marine Oil-Free Moisture Cushion makes sense to me.

It has a lightweight gel cream texture and is designed to give the skin plenty of moisture without relying on a heavy oily finish. I was particularly interested in it for those slightly awkward periods when my skin feels dehydrated but I still do not want anything rich sitting through my T zone.

After using it, the thing I noticed most was how comfortable my skin felt without losing that fresh, lightweight finish.

It feels much lighter than a traditional moisturiser

The texture is somewhere between a water gel and a light cream.

It has plenty of slip when first applied, so I only need a small amount for my face. It spreads easily and settles without leaving the greasy finish I would expect from a richer moisturiser.

My skin feels soft afterwards, but not coated.

That is probably the biggest reason I enjoy it. I can get enough hydration to stop my skin feeling tight without immediately wanting to blot my face afterwards.

It also works well in the morning because I do not have to wait ages before moving on to SPF.

Oil free does not mean drying

This is an important distinction because oily skin can still be dehydrated.

Your skin can produce plenty of oil and still lack water, which is why simply avoiding moisturiser altogether does not always make oily skin happier.

The Hyaluronic Marine Moisture Cushion is useful for that overlap.

It contains hyaluronic acid alongside marine algae and other conditioning ingredients, but the overall finish stays light.

For me, it works particularly well when my skin feels thirsty but I do not want the weight of a traditional cream.

I would not describe it as mattifying. It simply does not add the same richness or heaviness that an oilier moisturiser can.

That makes it especially appealing for combination skin.

How my skin feels after using it

The result is mainly about comfort and surface smoothness.

My skin feels more hydrated after application and looks slightly plumper because the surface is better moisturised.

Fine dehydration lines can look softer when the skin is properly hydrated, particularly around areas that tend to become dry.

I would not describe that as removing wrinkles or creating some dramatic anti ageing effect. It is simply what well hydrated skin tends to look like.

The finish is fresh and smooth rather than greasy.

That also makes it easy to layer with other skincare without the routine becoming too heavy.

How I use it

I apply it after cleansing and any serum I am using.

I prefer putting it onto clean, dry skin rather than leaving my face wet.

My morning routine is usually straightforward:

Cleanser, serum if I need one, Hyaluronic Marine Moisture Cushion and then SPF.

At night, I use it after serum and decide whether it is enough on its own depending on how my skin feels.

During warmer months, it is often all I need.

When the weather becomes colder or my skin is particularly dry, I may want something richer.

That flexibility is one of the reasons I think it suits combination skin so well.

Is it enough for very dry skin?

Probably not for everybody.

If your skin is mildly dry or mainly dehydrated, I think it gives a good amount of moisture without becoming heavy.

If your skin is genuinely very dry, flaky or constantly uncomfortable, you may find the oil free gel cream texture a little too light.

In that situation, I would either use it underneath a richer moisturiser or simply choose something more nourishing from the beginning.

I do not think every moisturiser needs to suit every skin type.

The strength of Hyaluronic Marine is that it gives lightweight hydration particularly well. Trying to make it behave like a thick barrier cream rather misses the point.

Does it work under SPF and makeup?

Yes, and this is one of the areas where I think the texture works particularly well.

I allow the moisturiser to settle, apply sunscreen and then give everything a little time before moving on to makeup.

Foundation applies comfortably over it and I do not find that the moisturiser makes my base slide around.

Because it is not overly rich, I can also use it with a more moisturising SPF without the combination becoming too much.

If I use excessive amounts of every layer, things can obviously start feeling heavy. A small amount of moisturiser is enough.

For daytime use, I think this is one of its strongest qualities.

Is it suitable for oily skin?

I think oily and combination skin are probably among the best matches for this product, particularly when dehydration is also an issue.

It gives the skin moisture without adding a rich oily layer.

That does not mean it controls oil production or replaces products designed specifically for shine.

It simply feels more comfortable on skin that does not enjoy thick creams.

If your skin is oily but regularly feels tight after cleansing, this is the sort of moisturiser I would consider.

What about sensitive skin?

My skin found it comfortable, but I would still avoid saying that any moisturiser is guaranteed to suit every sensitive skin type.

The formula is designed to work across a wide range of skin types and includes ingredients intended to support hydration and comfort.

Very reactive skin should still introduce new products sensibly.

If my skin were already extremely irritated, I would also keep the rest of my routine simple rather than expecting one moisturiser to compensate for too many strong actives.

Is it worth the price?

This is where the decision becomes more difficult.

There are much cheaper hyaluronic acid moisturisers available.

If your only requirement is basic hydration, I do not think you need to spend premium money to achieve it.

What I like about the Dr Dennis Gross formula is the texture. It manages to feel properly hydrating without turning heavy, sticky or greasy.

That can be harder to find than it sounds, particularly for combination skin.

So I think the value depends on what you are looking for.

If you want a basic moisturiser and do not care much about texture, I would spend less.

If you are constantly trying to balance dehydration with oiliness and dislike heavy creams, this becomes easier to justify.

Who do I think this moisturiser suits best?

I think it makes the most sense for combination, oily or normal skin that still struggles with dehydration.

It is also a good fit if you dislike rich creams but still want the skin to feel properly moisturised.

I would be less likely to recommend it as a standalone moisturiser for very dry winter skin.

And if budget is your main concern, there are definitely cheaper ways to add hyaluronic acid and hydration to a routine.

The reason to buy this one is the balance between moisture and lightness.

Can I use it morning and night?

Yes.

I use it according to what my skin needs. In warmer weather it can work comfortably both morning and evening.

Does oil free mean it is only for oily skin?

No.

Normal and dehydrated skin can enjoy it too. Oil free mainly describes the type of lightweight finish rather than restricting it to one skin type.

Can I wear it underneath makeup?

Yes. I find the light gel cream texture works particularly well under SPF and foundation.

I simply let each skincare layer settle before moving on to makeup.

Dr Dennis Gross Hyaluronic Marine Moisture Cushion is the sort of moisturiser I appreciate when my skin needs water but not weight.

It feels light, absorbs easily and leaves my face comfortable without a greasy coating.

The biggest strength is that balance. My skin can feel properly hydrated while the finish still works easily underneath sunscreen and makeup.

I do not think it is the obvious choice for somebody with very dry skin who wants a rich, protective cream.

I also do not think you need to spend this much if basic hydration is all you are looking for.

Where it earns its place is for combination or dehydrated skin that never seems completely happy with either lightweight gels or heavy creams.

This sits nicely somewhere in between.
